The solution from Siemens – Simatic IoT 2040 – is an affordable device for collecting, processing and transferring data directly to local or cloud storage for subsequent use in a corporate environment. Simatic IoT 2040 is the gateway between the cloud (IT layer) of a company and shop floor. Device is supporting lot of protocols and high-level programming languages that allows one to use Simatic IoT 2040 for data collection and build-up various analytics systems, including a predictive equipment maintenance system.
Applications of Simatic IoT 2040

Data forwarding to high-level systems (for example, to the cloud)

Data processing according to the specified algorithms

Communication capabilities and supported protocols:
- Slot Arduino for connecting I / O channels and sensors
- MiniPCI Express slot for integrating wireless applications
- 2х Ethernet 100 Mbit (IE/PN), RJ45 (separate) allow work in various separate networks
- 1x USB-controller for connection to any USB device
- 1x USB-device (micro USB)for connection to development systems
- 2 serial interface (switchable RS232 / 485) specifically for connecting smart sensors
- MQTT
- Modbus
- GPIO
- OPC UA
- S7
- IBM Watson IOT
- Microsoft Azure
- IOT2000
